Public fund-raising for community childcare

A public fund-raising campaign has begun to raise funds for the start up of a community child care and learning center in Humboldt/Dakota City. The group has a total capital goal of $1.5 million.

After two years of research and study, a group of interested citizens decided that now is the time for a community childcare and learning center to serve the citizens of the greater Humboldt/Dakota City area.
While Humboldt Community Daycare incorporated nearly three years ago, just within the past year the organization has chosen a site, an area immediately north of the existing Mease Elementary School; selected a name, Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center; hired an architect and developed blueprints and building plans for an approximately 8,000 square foot center; enlisted the support of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, city of Humboldt, city of Dakota City, and the Humboldt Community School District to enter into a 28E agreement to service the debt on a $500,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Loan; formed a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization to aid in fund-raising goals and ensure that private contributions maintain tax deductibility.
The organization also kicked off a corporate campaign for fund-raising, where organizations familiar to board members were approached about contributing to the center.
While that portion of the fund-raising effort is still ongoing, the board of directors realized that community resources are also needed if the Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center is going to reach its financial fund-raising goal of $1.5 million.
“A community-wide campaign will focus on educating the community on the need for the center and asking for their support and investment,” said Board Vice President Jim Vermeer.
