Council approves bridge aesthetics

The new Sumner Avenue Bridge won’t look like the current bridge, but will have some aesthetic design elements, after action by the Humboldt City Council Monday night.
After much discussion, the council settled on a standard open rail concrete fence. It will be 2-feet, 8-inches tall on the south side of the road. The north side of the bridge will have the same concrete fence with a T-style powder-coated galvanized steel black open rail fence above the concrete, extending to a height of 42 inches above the sidewalk, or 3-feet, 6-inches.
The railing on the north side of the sidewalk, next to the river, will be the galvanized steel black rail fencing, the same 3-feet, 6-inches in height.
If someone would like to see what the railing and fence would look like, they should drive on the Cedar Street Bridge overlooking the Boone River in Goldfield. The railing and fence will look much like that.
The substructure will include T-piers with a block wing in concrete with a concrete abutment at the ends. There will be a limestone block design at the northeast end of the bridge to tie into some of the existing historic structures in the area and to pay homage to the current bridge.
