County to have new flag

Bonita McLarnan of Humboldt designed this new county flag for Humboldt County, incorporating the Wildcat colors, a flowing wave, symbolizing the Des Moines River, and stars representing the county’s towns. Drawing courtesy of the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office.

Humboldt County has a new flag, or soon will have.
“Every county in the state has a county flag that flies during the Iowa State Fair at the fairgrounds,” Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice explained.
Humboldt County’s flag has been a plain white flag representing the county, with some small red dots representing the towns.
The county commissioned Bonita McLarnan of Humboldt to design a new flag that was more colorful and more representative of what Humboldt County actually is like.
McLarnan’s design (pictured) is in Humboldt Wildcat colors, blue and gold. She notes that the colors are also used on the city of Humboldt water tower and on police force vehicles.
The striped waves in the flag represent the flow of the Des Moines River, the flow of citizens coming and going, the flow of businesses and industries in the county and the flow of our children, McLarnan said.
In the center is a large blue star representing Humboldt, overlaid on an outlined star representing Dakota City, the county seat.
There are smaller stars in a semi-circle around the main stars, representing the towns of Bode, Bradgate, Gilmore City, Hardy, Livermore, LuVerne, Ottosen, Pioneer, Renwick, Rutland and Thor.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors is expected to officially adopt the county flag at its next meeting.
