Fair Board seeks $30,000 from county

Harness racing is just one of the events at the fairgrounds that utilizes an announcing stand. A new announcing stand is being constructed at Jensen Trailers, and will be ready for use this summer.

It was a day of listening to funding requests, paying bills and planning for the future for the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.
The supervisors held a two-hour public meeting at the courthouse and followed it up with budget work sessions discussing such items as public health and secondary roads.
Among the funding requests, was a visit from the Humboldt County Agricultural Society (Fair Board) and three of its officers, President Jeff Haselhuhn, Vice President Jeff Halverson and Secretary Jeff Goodell.
The fair board is asking for $30,000 in funding from the county supervisors, an increase over previous years.
Haselhuhn reported that in 2012, the fair board completed a rebuilding of the track at the fairgrounds by hauling in semi loads of clay and building up the crown. With the help of volunteer labor from the community, the board repaired and repainted the Floral Hall. The horse arena was also rebuilt with labor from 4-H members and their leaders. The board also purchased plans and secured engineering for a new grandstand or significant grandstand improvements at some point in the near future.
“The increase in funds we’d like to use to put a new steel roof on the rabbit barn. The shingles are in dire need of repair. That’s one of the oldest buildings on the fairgrounds, and we need to preserve it for the future,” Haselhuhn said. “Also the commons area with the bingo doors, we have a problem there with ice build-up and we’d like to build a roof over that area to allow for safer access to the building, which is also now used as a public polling site,” Haselhuhn told the board. “There’s a transformer there for electrical service that we also need to protect.”
The county supervisors said they would take the funding request under consideration.
