Panther boys win 1st game, 44-21

CWL's Jared Haler goes up for a basket against North Iowa during opening week in Corwith.

CWL earned its first win of the season Tuesday night (Dec. 4) by turning back Clay Central-Everly, 63-56 in conference action at Royal. The Panthers are now 1-3 on the year. See the Humboldt Independent Newspaper for complete stories and photos.

Panthers fall to GTRA, 63-56
You can probably bet the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne boys will be working on shooting this week.
Panther head coach Mel Haler says free throws were the difference in his team’s 63-56 setback to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire last Friday night (Nov. 30) in Corwith.
The Panthers, 0-3 overall on the season, shot 30 percent from the field and missed 12 free throws in falling to the Knights.
Josh Hilbert scored 15 points, Esden Carroll had 12 and Derek Studer and Jared Haler each had 10 to pace CWL. Haler also collected 14 rebounds and Hilbert blocked five shots for the Panthers, who trailed 52-40 after three quarters but outscored GT/RA 16-11 in the final quarter to come close.
“We missed way too many free throws, especially in the first half,” coach Haler said. “The kids played their hearts out. They played good. We changed from a 1-3-1 to a 2-3 zone defense and that helped quite a bit. The kids are playing a lot better and figuring out things are run.”
“We need to become more consistent with our shooting. We’ll definitely spend some time in practice on shooting. Now that we’re getting the other fundamentals down, we can dedicate more time to shooting,” Haler said.
North Iowa 69, CWL 30
Defending state tournament qualifier North Iowa opened with a 36-14 halftime lead and went on to down CWL, 69-30 in non-conference play in the Corwith gym on Nov. 27.
Josh Hilbert scored 13 points to pace the Panthers. Derek Studer and Esden Carroll each had five, followed by Randy Cram with four, Andy Hauswirth with three. Troy Kettwick led the Bison with 25 points.

Broncos 85, Panthers 31
A second quarter surge lifted the Belmond-Klemme Broncos past Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne, 85-31 in non-conference basketball at Belmond on Nov. 26.

The Panthers return to action at home on Friday, Dec. 7, when they host Harris-Lake Park. They host Northeast Hamilton on Saturday, Dec. 8, and they’ll visit CAL Latimer on Dec. 10 and host West Bend-Mallard on Dec. 14.
