Peters finally settling in at ISU

Levi Peters

Levi Peters is finally back on the football field.
Peters, a Gilmore City native and former Twin River Valley and Fort Dodge High standout, is enjoying an injury-free spring of playing football for Iowa State University.
Peters underwent knee surgery twice in 2011 and enrolled at Iowa State that fall as a part-time student, not to use up any athletic eligibility. Then a year ago, on the third day of spring practice, he broke a bone in his foot and the surgery and resulting down time all but forced him to red-shirt in 2012.
He’s finally healthy and paying his dues in spring ball. Peters and the Cyclones will wrap up spring ball with their annual spring game this Saturday (April 20) at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
“It’s good. It’s very competitive. It’s fun putting the pads on. I haven’t had live football since my senior year of high school. I got hurt on the third practice last spring. I didn’t get a feel for what spring ball is all about last year so I’m finding out how competitive it really is,” Peters said.
Peters plays what coaches today label Will linebacker or weakside inside linebacker. He’s bulked himself up to 215 pounds on his 5-foot-11 frame and is No. 3 on the depth chart.
However, he’s earned two starting spots on special teams for the Cyclones.

“Right now I’ve got a couple of starting spots on special teams that will give me valuable experience. That’s pretty cool,” Peters said.
“Right now I’m first string on punt and kick return. I’m a backup on kickoff and punt return,” Peters said. “I’m working hard to be a four-year contributor to this football team. That’s my goal here at Iowa State. I’m excited about getting on the field.”

Iowa State begins its season at home on Aug. 31 against Northern Iowa.
