Supervisors get ready to rumble on roads

Humboldt County Engineer Paul Jacobson (pictured) told the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors Monday that there is a good chance the county can qualify for traffic safety funds to pay for the majority of the costs for adding rumble strips to intersections on county paved roads.

Humboldt County will be getting rumble strips to alert traffic to oncoming stop signs, in an effort to slow traffic and reduce accidents at the county’s intersections.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the additions at nearly 60 intersection locations in the county.
The traffic safety additions may be phased in as work can be completed, and as funds are available.
The board action followed a presentation by Humboldt County Engineer Paul Jacobson and Assistant Engineer Dave Powell Monday, at the board’s regular weekly meeting.
Powell presented a number of statistics regarding traffic accidents in the county during the past 10 years.
The engineers estimated the costs to do all of the rumble strips to be in excess of $25,000, it would include the regrinding of existing rumble strips.
“I think in light of the increasing use of communication devices in vehicles, if we can save one accident from happening or perhaps one life, for $25,000, I’d be totally in favor of doing it,” Humboldt County Supervisors Jerry Haverly said, in approving the measure.
