Wolverine girls open regional play in shutout win

Kenzie Grimm (left) and Ashley Schmidt stop this opponent at the net in recent action in West Bend.

West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate opened Class 1A regional tournament play last week (Oct. 16) at home with a three-set sweep over Algona Bishop Garrigan.
The Wolverines won by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19. Heather Fehr made 10 kills at the net while Ashley Schmidt had nine and McKenzie Grimm eight. Emily Bormann made seven. Courtney Bargmann directed the offense and made 31 assists. Kayla Banwart had 11 digs. Grimm had five blocks at the net and also served 25 of 26 for six aces.
Wolverine co-coach Kari Ehlers was cautiously optimistic entering the contest.
“You can’t go off of Garrigan’s record this year because they play 2A, 3A and 4 A schools in their conference,” Ehlers said. “They really deserve more credit than a number of people give them. But we don’t take them lightly, either. Our girls were ready to play and they showed it tonight.”
“I’m am so proud of how they played. We’ve been working all season on cutting down on mental errors and becoming mentally stronger. Tonight was a great example of the things we’ve been working on,” Ehlers said. “I’ve never seen a group of girls who want to succeed more than this group of girls.”
The Wolverines played host to North Iowa on Oct. 23 in West Bend. North Iowa defeated CWL in three sets in their tourney opener. A win by the Wolverines Tuesday night (Oct. 23) would send them in to a regional semifinal round match at home on Friday, Oct. 26, against Laurens-Marathon or Storm Lake St. Mary’s.
