| Humboldt's Madison, Arnold 1st team all-conference Wildcat softball team went 20-14 Anna Madison and Jos Arnold were both selected first-team All-North Central Conference softball by the league's coaches recently.
They were joined by sophomore Brenna Wetzel, who was selected second-team all-conference as a utility player.
Their selections were announced by Humboldt head coach Doug Van Pelt.
Madison, a senior first baseman, batted .301 this past season with three home runs and a team-high 24 runs batted in. She had a slugging percentage of .469 and a fielding percentage of .974.
Arnold, a junior, batted .410 overall with 14 RBI and scored a team-high 41 runs from her leadoff position. She also had a team-high 25 stolen bases. Her on-base percentage was .446 and her slugging percentage was .623. Playing shortstop, her fielding percentage was .925.
Van Pelt praised his youthful squad, which finished the year 9-9 and fourth in the North Central Conference. The Wildcats were 20-14 overall. They came on strong late in the year and won their first round Class 3A District tournament game.
"When you look back at the improvement from day one to day done, by every individual, was fast and that resulted in improvement for our team," Van Pelt said. "We were playing our best softball in the final two weeks of the season. That's what you always hope for as a coach and that's all you can expect."
"This group exceeded my expectations with 20 wins and by finishing fourth in the conference. At 9-9 in the conference, 20-14 overall, I would have taken it last spring if you had told me that's how we would finish starting out with our young squad," Van Pelt said. "The girls got better every night. The girls were ready to go almost every night, which is a key when you look at our inexperience."
"To do as well as we did is a great tribute to the kids and their work ethic. That's what we can control. We like to prepare for the things we can't control and be ready to go whichever way the ball bounces," Van Pelt said. "The girls were mentally ready and focused almost every night."
"I think the improvement you saw this year indicates good things to come," Van Pelt said.
The JV squad went 5-14-2 overall under coach Rhonda Van Pelt. The freshman/eighth grade squad was 7-13 overall under coach Erica Post, a former Wildcat player and current Buena Vista University athlete.
